July 30 – August 9, 2024 – Leaders and Organizers of Community Organization in Asia (LOCOA) representatives and consultants from South Korea (Korean Solidarity for Overseas Community Organizing in Asia - Koco), the Philippines (Community Organizers Multiversity - COM and Urban Poor Associates – UPA), and India (People’s Responsible Organization of United Dharavi - PROUD India) held a series of discussions to tackle and draft a plan, develop useful tools, and come up with modules for the reactivation of community organizing in Dharavi, Mumbai, India. The goal is to train young community organizers and develop the capacity of community leaders to sustain community organizing work in the community.
Representatives from India, Anthony and Nitin, visited partner-communities of COM and UPA, namely, Pasig City In-city Resettlement people’s plan housing project and Baseco, Manila community livelihood and savings project. They also participated in the mobilization of the Dumagat-Remontado Indigenous People in front of the main office of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) to oppose the construction of the Kaliwa Dam, which will destroy the ecosystem of the Sierra Madre mountain range and consequently have an adverse effect on the indigenous people’s sacred land that they have cultivated for thousands of years.
